From USA to Chongqing, China-Q&A with Ian Warsteane

Ian was born in Washington DC and raised in Ft. Collins CO., USA and is currently living in Chongqing, China. He is a graduate of The Lincoln University of PA with a BS in Business Management. He has been teaching at OWEN for almost a year. Find out why Ian likes living in Chongqing.

What is your favorite part about being a teacher at OWEN Education?

Owen is such a wonderful company to work for. I have worked for Owen for 1 year now. They have been over supportive of me and it is refreshing to feel appreciated by your employer. I love my students and they really love me. Owen truly is a family away from home.

How was your transition to life in Chongqing?

My transition to life in Chongqing was smooth and refreshing. There is so much to do and I’m never bored. I’ve made many friends here too. Everything is very affordable in Chongqing and I live comfortably. I like this city the best!

What is something that has surprised you about living in Chongqing?

Chongqing in my opinion is the best city in China! Any thing you’re interested in is here and the locals are very friendly!

What advice would you give to those who are contemplating teaching in China?

My advice for those who are thinking about teaching in China is do for the experience. Most people from western countries are unfortunately misinformed about China. There are many English schools and English teacher recruiters here. Make sure you research the company’s that you’re considering to work for thoroughly before signing a contract. You will be more satisfied if you find a good company that values you the first timeWhat is your favorite food in China?

What is your favorite food in China?

My favorite food is Chongqing’s famous hot pot. It’s spicy and delicious perfect for any flavor enthusiast!

What is something you do for fun in Chongqing?

There are many fun things to do in Chongqing mountains for hiking, amusement parks, rivers for boat cruises. I like to party, Chongqing’s 9th street is my favorite spot to hang out. There are many clubs there and the night life is awesome!

Have you done any traveling since being in China?

I haven’t traveled outside of China because of the Covid-19 epidemic. I’ve lived in Foshan, Fujian and now Chongqing. I have traveled to 7 cities in China. Beijing, Hong Kong, Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Putian, Chengdu and Qingdao. This country is enormous and there’s a lot to explore!
